Mask, a beautiful theatre genre that stimulates the imagination from both performer and audience, is also an excellent training tool for actors to strengthen physical presence and versatility.
In this workshop, Philippe Gaulier will introduce to participants to different forms of masked theatre with Commedia Dell’arte Masks, using his signature method of Le Jeu as the core of the training. Gaulier will also lead participants on an exploration of Moliere’s well-known comedy of manners, The Miser.
Philippe Gaulier is one of the most influential and revolutionary masters in the realm of performance training. His famous teaching philosophy lies within “Le Jeu” (play), which emphasises the pleasure of an actor. Philippe believes that “play” and “theatre” are interwoven concepts. At the same time, he also emphasises elements such as “complicite”, “fixed point”, designation of “major” and “minor” roles, and more. He is strict, unrelenting and harsh, yet he inspires continuous laughter in class due to his unconventional sense of humour. With his sharp and incisive observations, actors find themselves unable to conceal their flaws in his presence, and surrender to his bid to excavate their unique “beauty”.

The most important aspect of an arts education for a child is its integration within culture itself. Culture sets forth the foundation on which a country is built upon: its direction, pathways and values. The education of arts and culture very much emphasizes the development of character.
