A year after Practice was established at its first home in Clemenceau Avenue, the school moved to a house on 12 Sommerville Walk. Over the next 22 years, hundreds of students passed through its doors, learning theatre, dance, music and design.
Now a kindergarten, the current site is still home to learning! Join Goh Lay Kuan and Kuo Jian Hong as they return once again to “Old Practice”…
Stamford Arts Centre

The same year that the Practice Theatre Ensemble was formed, Practice found their home for the next three decades at the newly formed Stamford Arts Centre. Originally a Japanese school before World War II, the building was converted to a multi-tenanted arts centre housing many of Singapore’s pioneer arts companies.
From the unpredictable chaos of street theatre to sweaty rehearsals in the aircon-less rehearsal hall, join Wong May Lan and Ng Mun Poh for a wander down memory lane, and the familiar corridors of Stamford Arts Centre.
Waterloo Street Neighbours

Practice’s move to Stamford Arts Centre in 1988 marked the beginning of our long love affair with Waterloo Street. From productions like The Waterloo Murders (2003) to Four Horse Road (2018, 2020), our home has provided us ample stories for inspiration. At the same time, we’ve made so many friends along the way. From the vendors along the street to our fellow artists, its time to meet our neighbours!

Since moving into the iconic blue and white shophouse four years ago, Practice has had programmes happen in literally EVERY corner of the building. How did we unlock the building’s potential?
