Nasi Goreng Diplomacy is an ongoing artistic project by Chu Hao Pei which looks at food diplomacy in the form of nasi goreng. Inspired by the former Indonesian President Megawati's use of the dish to de-escalate tensions with political rivals, Nasi Goreng Diplomacy advances bottom-up diplomacy with different Southeast Asian communities by employing taste as the entry point to further difficult conversations and defuse tensions.
NASI GORENG DIPLOMACY: BALI (INDONESIA)
We have invited Balinese Dancer Elly and Batik Specialist Tony, who will be introducing the disappearing Balinese fried rice — Nasi Goreng Suna Cekuh. We will prepare the dish together and discuss at length: the disappearing recipe of Nasi Goreng Suna Cekuh, the uniqueness of Bali rice, overtourism in Bali and its effects on Singapore-Indonesian relations from a cultural diplomacy angle.
