Nasi Goreng Diplomacy is an ongoing artistic project by Chu Hao Pei which looks at food diplomacy in the form of nasi goreng. Inspired by the former Indonesian President Megawati's use of the dish to de-escalate tensions with political rivals, Nasi Goreng Diplomacy advances bottom-up diplomacy with different Southeast Asian communities by employing taste as the entry point to further difficult conversations and defuse tensions.
NASI GORENG DIPLOMACY: MALAYSIA
In the final session, we are preparing the familiar Nasi Goreng Kampung commonly found in the Malay World. What ingredients and cooking styles would satisfy the rivalrous tastebuds of Malaysians and Singaporeans? Can we put aside our sovereign and gastronomical differences and find common ground in Nasi Goreng Kampung? Drawing on the concept of "same same but different", the session hopes to invite citizens from both sides of the causeway to gather and share what connects us more than divides us, on a day that we once celebrated together…
